Being born and raised in America, a young woman reflects upon her life experiences as a first generation, Pakistani American-- or more commonly known in her world as an ABCD (American Born Confused Desi). With each influential phase of her life, she shares a recipe influenced by her taste buds, which relates to each event.

As I begin, I am reminded of what my daughter's piano teacher spoke to the piano before he allowed her to play. "For what we are about to do to you, I apologize." I really do, as I want to say marvelous things about this book...I will begin by saying that I love the book's concept, I love the book's cover art, and I kind of like the book's introduction. I also like the fact that that the author had the intention of seamlessly incorporating recipes from her experience growing up as an "American Born Confused Desi" into her (autobiography?) of being born an "American Born Confused Desi". Unfortunately for the reader, the recipes seemed senselessly misguided and completely out of place in every context in which they were incorporated. Therefore, the author left her unfortunate readers, whether "American Born" or not, as confused as a bunch of chameleons in a bag of Skittles . The book, which is more of a pamphlet of randomness than anything else, seems to be a hodge-podge of self deprecation which is repeated over and over again. Doc, we get it. People teased you. Guess what? Most of us were teased as children as well. Nothing to write home about.I was really looking forward to reading this book, as I find reading anything about the lives of the children of immigrants to the United States intriguing and absolutely fascinating. When I read the previous reviews of the book, it sounded like it was going to be a ball to read, too bad it turned into a real bummer! If I could give it zero stars, I would. So, I'll give it a paltry 1 star out of 5 for the author that COULD HAVE, but didn't give enough of herself to actually deliver.
Hopefully future editions will be edited more carefully.

Now I Know My ABCDs A Young Woman Discovery of Self Identity One Recipe at a Time edition by Dr Sumera Rashid Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
Dr Sumera Rashid has done a great job in juxtaposing recipes and growing up as a 1st generation American. This is an awesome read, loved every page of this book!!! Asima R Chaudhry
Dr. Sumera Rashid does a great job of relating her story of growing up multi-cultured in America, more specifically growing up as an American Born Confused Desi. The included recipes are a superb bonus and a great addition to the narrative. The easy going style of writing is engaging and fun - you won't want to put it down.
I thought it was wonderful how much the writer emphasized the importance of Identity and being an ABCD myself..I was able to relate to many of her experiences and really appreciated the intertwining of both cultures through her recipes which makes the book even more enjoyable.
I'm looking forward to putting several of her recipes (Keema Bun and the ABCD cake pops are my favorites) to use with my own girls and sharing the stories behind it with them.
This book is great in the fact that it describes two complete polar opposite cultures, and how they meld together in some ways. Being born in the United States with parents from South Asia, it is often hard to find balance between staying true to the culture of our elders while incorporating the more modern culture the younger generations have adapted. Dr. Sumera Rashid takes us through her own journey, and with it, shares delectable recipes that are blend of home style South Asian dishes with American desserts. It is a wonderful read!
I just received this book in the mail recently, and it is well worth the money. Dr. Sumera Rashid intelligently provides a personal perspective of how two cultures seamlessly enrich a person's identity by utilizing her own life stages. It is a fun and clever way of helping others gain insight into the struggles of an "ABCD" while simultaneously rewarding the reader with delicious recipes. Thanks Dr. Rashid.

Integrating to the melting pot of America is easier said than done... This book gives that unique perspective only someone that is a first generation Pakistani American can give. With lovely recipes mixed through the book it gives a lightness to the subject ... And a value added feature that not only do you get a non fiction story to read by recipes to try at home. I read it in one sitting couldn't put it down !
